Microsoft kicked off public beta for 2012 Xbox Live update, but quickly ran out of space

Microsoft kicked off public beta for 2012 Xbox Live update, but quickly ran out of space

And just like that, it was all over. Shortly after the well-known, always-informative Major Nelson announced that this year's upcoming Xbox Live update had officially opened its beta doors to the public, he soon followed up with a note saying it was already "full and no longer accepting sign-ups." For the lucky ones, though, the public beta will give them early access to a slew of anticipated Xbox Live features, such as personalized dashboard recommendations, improved category / discovery features and, best of all, a look at Internet Explorer on Microsoft's entertainment console. Sadly, Major Nelson didn't say whether or not there's going to be more spaces opening up soon, but we'll keep you in the loop if anything changes.

Motorola to allow bootloader unlocking from Photon Q 4G LTE onwards

Motorola to allow bootloader unlocking from Photon Q onwards

Motorola's initial promise to allow unlocked bootloaders came across to many enthusiasts as somewhat hollow: as long as there was an escape clause, carriers like AT&T and Verizon could clamp down and maintain the tough-to-modify status quo. RAZR-philes will be happy to know that there's a plan to cut their own chains loose, after all. Starting with the Photon Q 4G LTE's August launch, owners will have the option to unlock the bootloader of at least some devices in an official way that reportedly keeps carriers satisfied. Details of how the process works will come later; we don't know if Motorola will take a cue from HTC's identifier tokens or try something more exotic, even if it's likely in either case to offer a big, fat disclaimer regarding the warranty. The option won't be the same as buying a phone that's unlocked from the start, but we don't think too many custom ROM lovers will mind after knowing that one more Android manufacturer is on their side.

[Thanks, RTbar]

Tim Cook talks new iPhone speculation

Tim Cook talks new iPhone speculation

During Apple's Q3 2012 conference call, Apple CEO Tim Cook repeatedly addressed the rumors and speculation surrounding new iPhones (and other Apple products) and how they cause Apple to lose sales of current generation products. Rumors likely refers to the stories sites like iMore post that reveal potential Apple product plans like the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. Speculation likely refers to customers noticing Apple's habit of releasing new iPhones and iPads every year, and then anticipating similar release schedules the next year.

While Apple Chief Financial Officer, Peter Oppenheimer, seemed less amused by the cost of these rumors and speculation, Tim Cook took a more pragmatic view. To paraphrase Cook:

We try very hard to keep our roadmaps secret and confidential, go to extreme actions to do that, however that doesn't stop people from speculating and wondering. We can never stop that. That's one of the great things about this country. So we won't spend any energy trying to stop that. I'm glad people want the next thing. I'm super happy about that.

Oppenheimer might see the money Apple lost from people delaying purchases in hopes new products come soon, but Cook clearly sees the money Apple will make in the future from those same people. And more. As the excitement they bring to Apple's brand is an essential part of Apple's marketing. It's what gets them line ups around the block and far more headlines than any competitor.

Apple has released a new iPhone every year since 2007. Savvy shoppers know Apple is likely to announce another new iPhone this year. Cook isn't upset those shoppers might be holding off buying an iPhone today. He knows they'll be lining up to buy a new iPhone later in the year.

Mountain Lion is Steve Jobs? You Be the Judge.

Something about the Apple Mountain Lion logo looked familiar to a few folks on the Internet. Was it the whiskers? Or the furry ears? Nope, according to the discussion board lollygaggers, the fierce OS feline bears an eerie resemblance to the late Steve Jobs.

Hypervocal created a GIF to help you judge.

CERN Scientist Talks About Higgs Boson, Particle Colliders And End Of The World

Big BangEarlier this month, scientists from CERN announced that they had found the theoretical particle called the Higgs Boson. The entire world knew they found it, but not many people actually knew what the Higgs is, or how it's discovered. Turns out it's a pretty difficult thing to do. First, you need a really, really big machine called a particle accelerator. That machine shoots streams of particles at one another until they collide. When they collide, the energy they give off is something in the ball park of the big bang (yes, that big bang), but much smaller.

OnLive bringing console gaming to Google TV

OnLive

We have incredible 3D games built for Android tablets -- titles like Shadowgun or Max Payne -- but what's been missing out of great games has been Google TV. OnLive, the popular streaming service that brings actual desktop PC games to any screen, will change that. Using the OnLive Google TV app and a compatible controller, you'll have a huge library of PC games to choose from, all streamed directly to your big screen via your Google TV interface. All the features of the desktop client (for Windows and Mac) are on-board, including the spectating arena and multi-view play and chat. It's a great way to fill a gap in Google TV's content warehouse, and everyone loves games.

OnLive will be shipping on the Visio Co-Star, and will be coming to the LG G2 Smart TV in a future software patch. But the best news is that a stand-alone Google TV app is in the works that will install on any box or TV, so those of us who bought a competitors product aren't left out in the cold. No mention of when exactly we should expect the app is given, but we'll be watching Google Play for any news. Read what OnLive founder and CEO Steve Perlman has to say at the source link below.

?Gangster Squad? Postponed to 2013 Amid Aftermath of Theater Shooting

The deadly Colorado shooting spree on July 20 has influenced Warner Bros. to postpone the release date of Gangster Squad from Sept. 7 to Jan. 11. The movie trailer had already been pulled from YouTube and theaters.

The studio will reshoot parts of the flick after concerns arose about a pivotal scene in which 1940s mobsters use sub-machine guns inside Grauman's Chinese Theatre to attack moviegoers.

Warner Bros. confirmed the new date late Wednesday but did not reveal whether the scene will be replaced completely with a new setting or edited to address comparisons to the Aurora, Colo., theater shooting.

On July 20th, 12 people died and 58 were wounded after a gunman opened fire

Facebook?s First Earnings Call: What to Expect

Facebook's first earnings call as a public company has been hyped in the business press like a summer blockbuster. It's a shot at redemption, maybe the feel-good call of the summer. Or perhaps it will be another bummer, like the company's May IPO.

Either way, there's more drama around the call than usual, which makes it interesting even for those who don't usually follow business calls. So if you're a Facebook investor, a social media enthusiast or just someone who has time on their hands this Thursday afternoon, here are some things to watch for as you grab your popcorn:

It's the Ads, Stupid

Facebook makes most of its money through advertising. Yet the company went public…

iOS developer says 'Android designed for piracy'

Don't care

Matt Gemmell, iOS developer and author on Apple-centric sites and publications such as MacFormat and Tap!, has written a post on his blog about how "Android was designed for piracy from the ground up". He mentions sideloading as a conduit for thievery, and has all sorts of bad things to say about Android's "open mentality".

Here's where we could mention things like sandboxing, and Android's Application Licensing system that checks for a valid license every time you open an app, but why bother? It's his job to say everything Apple is better than everything else. It's also his right, and I don't want to think about a place where someone else can decide what I should hear or see -- or install on my phone.

In short, AC, like the Honey Badger, don't care. Carry on Mr. Gemmell.
